About the tea
Lapsang Souchong, a unique and bold black tea, is renowned for its distinctive smoky flavour profile. This superior grade Formosa Lapsang Souchong showcases large, dark grey leaves that have been carefully dried over pinewood fires. This traditional smoking process imparts a rich, smoky character to the tea, creating a truly unforgettable taste experience.
Lapsang Souchong traces its origins to the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian Province, China. Legend has it that this unique tea was born out of necessity during the Qing Dynasty. As the story goes, soldiers camped in a tea factory, using freshly picked leaves as bedding. To salvage the tea, farmers quickly dried the leaves over pinewood fires, resulting in a smoky flavour that captivated taste buds and became a beloved tradition.
Unlike many commercial “smoky flavoured” teas that rely on artificial flavours and aromas, our Lapsang Souchong’s smoky character is entirely natural. The tea leaves are carefully selected and processed using traditional methods, including the crucial step of smoking over pinewood fires. This time-honoured technique infuses the tea with the essence of the wood, creating a complex and captivating flavour that is both bold and refined.
When brewed, Lapsang Souchong produces a deep, amber-coloured liquor with a robust, smoky aroma. The taste is equally impressive, with a strong, malty flavour that is balanced by subtle notes of sweetness and a lingering smoky finish. This unique combination of flavours makes Lapsang Souchong a truly distinctive tea that is perfect for tea connoisseurs and those seeking a bold and adventurous beverage.
