DARJEELING GOLDEN FLOWERY ORANGE PEKOE

A large leaf from one of Darjeeling best tea gardens.

About the tea

Darjeeling Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe (GFOP) is a black tea renowned as the “Champagne of Teas.” This exquisite brew hails from the Darjeeling region in the Indian state of West Bengal, nestled amidst the breathtaking Himalayan foothills. The high altitude, fertile soil, and abundant rainfall of the Darjeeling region create ideal conditions for tea cultivation, while the region’s distinct monsoon climate, with its alternating wet and dry seasons, influences the tea plant’s growth and development.

The term “Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe” describes the appearance of the tea leaves. “Golden” refers to the delicate, golden tips that adorn the leaves, a hallmark of high-quality Darjeeling tea. “Flowery” signifies the presence of fine, downy hairs on the leaves, which contribute to the tea’s complexity and floral aroma. “Orange Pekoe” is a historical term that denotes the size and shape of the leaves, with “Orange” likely referring to Holland’s House of Orange – the first European nation to import/export teas.

Darjeeling GFOP is celebrated for its light, bright liquor and its distinctive muscatel flavour profile. When brewed, it yields a cup with a delicate balance of sweetness, acidity, and astringency. The tea’s aroma is often described as floral, with notes of citrus, honey, and sometimes even a hint of spice. The aftertaste is clean and refreshing, leaving a pleasant lingering sweetness on the palate.
